She saw it again and relived the sorrow of watching it all happen. In her nightmare she saw her parents and her sister, and they were smiling at her. She saw the picnic lunch she and Ann had made, and most of all she saw the two loving adults that had raised her. They were sitting on a blanket in a park with oak trees all around, the same oak trees her and Ann would climb.
Just like the memory, right before she took the first bit of her droopy peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the sky turned gray. Next, it started to rain. Then, hail. Her and her family ran for cover as the large balls of ice pounded the ground like a stampede. Just as soon as it had kicked up it died down. The ground was littered with ice and the picnic ruined. The disaster was far from over. Her body started to ace she wanted to leave this memory but the dream tightened its grip when she tried to pull away. And once more her family walked from the protection to come face to face with death. His hair was a shade of gray that reminded her of her grandfather’s dead corpse. His eyes were the piercing color of blood as it touched the air. He stepped close and eat them, the only family she had ever known. He took them from her.
She gasped for air as she flung her upper body from the bed. She was covered in a layer of sweat and breathing hard. That memory always left her in the worst condition. She threw off the covers as she placed her feet on the cold marble floor and walked over to her floor length mirror. She saw her self as she was. Blue hair falling in her face, purple eyes slow to judge, and her small figure as curved as always. She was wondering if she needed a shower when she heard the clock go off.
damn that stupid old clock she told her self as she headed for her bathroom door. The large room was scarcely filled. A make-up table, a wall of mirror, a shower, a bath, and a door that led into her closet occupied it. She turned the water in the shower on to cold before peeling off her too small tee shirt and shorts. Once in her undergarments she grabbed a owl out of the storage closet and slung it over the rack. She pulled off the bra and underwear as she opened the shower door. The cold water made her heart rate increase, but cleared her head. She scrubbed her body from head to foot washing her hair she named off things to be done. Once cleaned she sat down in the shower that was as large as three normal showers used by the knights. I wish things were easier she told her self. That was the last thing she remembered as she drifted into oblivion.
When she awoke she heard voices out side her door. Someone had moved her form her shower to her bed and she was dressed in a new pair of nightclothes. The people where coming in her room.
“Mistress are you awake?” the voice was familiar and yet she couldn’t place it yet. She opened her eyes to see Yolanda standing next to her bed. Yolanda smiled when she saw her mistress’s eyes open.
“Good its already high morning and to day at noon you’ve got your dress fittings,” when Kel groaned Yolanda just shook her head. Kel hated that part of her life having to look good for the kingdom. She owned acre after acre of land, but felt no joy in ruling it. Yolanda moved across the spacious room that was barley furnished, to open the silk curtains that hung over the windows. Kel rolled out of bed with a thunk and walked toward her wardrobe to grab something to put on. She was fumbling with a hanger and gown when Yolanda came up behind her and gently took the dress. Kel happily handed it to the older woman and walked over to her dressing screen.
After she was dressed and cleaned, Kel headed for the dining hall where she took her breakfast. This morning it was eggs, ham, and warm, moist rolls. She dragged out eating for as long as she could before a maid came for her. She rode in to the busy, noisy town where she was seldom stopped to converse with some nobles she new, they arrived at the shop that always did her dresses. It took hours to fit the fabric perfectly to her shape. She was glad to be out of that stuffy aired room and able to stretch her legs. She asked her groom if they could walk through the city on there way back and he agreed. He paid on of the guards to take the horses back while she started walking looking at all the colorful things being bargained off in front of her.
Even though she came home empty handed she was glad she had taken the stroll and time to look. She decided to watch the pages joust today and head for the practice courts. She had forgotten to change so she was still in a dress as she walked out over the muddy fields. She had to rip a few times as her skirts got stuck on pieces of debris, but she finally made it and was able to watch the last couple rounds. As the pages headed toward the stables the training master Duke Gareth walked over to her.
“You shouldn’t be out here dressed like that,” there was laughter in his eyes as he took in her ragged appearance.
“Yes well, people shouldn’t sleep with pigs and yet some do,” she retorted. He started to laugh and all the pages turned to look at him and his companion. Once they saw it was the princess the hurriedly took off in the direction of the stables to untack their horses and get to the bathes. She stood there leaning on the fence in such a way her manners teachers would have scolded her for, till he got him self under control.
“Very nice Milady. But just remember that you will be punished for such un-lady like things you do, such as this,” she detected mockery in his voice, but let him get away with it for he was an old friend. He treated her like a daughter even if she was not his own. She ignored the comment and changed the subject instead.
“Anyone good this year?” she inquired this every year; it was like a tradition between the tow of them.
“No one that compares to you my dear, but there are a few that I feel confident in,” she took in the big man his gray hair hung just below his ears and his green eyes were always alive when he was with her as if he got joy from being with her. He was a built man, husky and smooth perfect for his job and the best person for it.
“You’ll never find someone as good as I sir. For I am of a blood that was made for such time consuming activities.” She beat her cheats with a fist and a loud thud. She smiled at such a comment and turned toward the east.
“Beautiful weather ma’am, it’ll be a nice day. Alas I must be off, good day your Highness.” And he strode off to the stables to yell at the pages and squires not yet ready for the next duty. She was left to enjoy the blue sky by her self, and took the incentive to go to the gardens. She infrequently was able to take the time to go these days. She would be turning sixteen in a few months and was placed with more duties as it was, she would have to try and go more often.
That night she was yawning as she climbed into bed another day gone by she said as she took the vile tasting liquid that would help her sleep without dreams, that she got from the place healers. She knew tomorrow would be one of those days she’d have to try to get through she had thongs to do and people to see and no one was going to let her out of their sight after her disappearing into the gardens that day. As soon as she laid her head down of the soft pillow her eyes dropped and she drifted into dreamless sleep.
Morning light awoke her with a start. What were her curtains doing open? Then she saw a dress laid out for he ready to be put on. Oh great, she thought, the day has started early and without me. After she was put the dress back in the wardrobe, pulled on breeches and a shirt, and tied back her long blue hair, she walked towards excurses yards instead of taking breakfast. The pages and squires were using staffs today; she walked on to the field and counted off the pairs there was one boy standing alone next to Ronald, the staff teacher.
“May I pair off with you?” she asked the boy, he looked about fourteen. He nodded and so did Ronald, so she took him out and aligned him with the other pairs of boys. She started with upper attacks and he blocked, then she went to lower, he did very well blocking both so she got faster adding in different pattern thrusts. He was starting to have trouble when she hit a little too hard in the belly and knocked the wind out of him. She noticed she was sweating before she saw that all the boys had stopped and were watching her. Well what have we here she thought all theses boys distracted so easily. Ronald walked over to her and handed her a flask full of water.
“Don’t you have things to do today? I remember being told of your duties for the day by Gareth,” she was looking at her with the look he often gave to those boy who where going to be great knights. She smiled up at him and his blond curls and blue eyes. Everyone knew her business.
“Yes, I’m afraid I have much to do to day, but this brings me satisfaction whilst the other chores do not!” she was sick of everyone telling her what came first and how to do her job. “If you think you can do better than go ahead and take the crown!” In her anger she forgot Ronald’s kindness in his words and she stormed off in the direction of the place. When she got to her room she bathed and dressed in to “proper” lady-like attire and set off for the council meeting room.
After a long day of duty to the crown she set off to dine with Gareth in the page and squire mess. She was waited on by a squire named Myles and barley ate for she was talking to her old friend most the time.
